My oldest memory of seeing an Urli is, as a kid, when I used to visit our Tharawad (ancestral home) in Kerala during my summer vacations. My grandmother had these huge Urlis in her kitchen which was used to roast rice powder for rice cakes or for making payasam when her entire clan had gathered under the roof. For me the Urli, always symbolized abundance, heritage and tradition. With the passing years and technological advancements my grandmother’s brass utensils were soon replaced by sleek and shiny steel and hindalium ware. The brass Urlis relegated to being inmates of some dark store room in a nondescript corner of the house. I don’t remember what became of them eventually, have not seen them in my subsequent visits. I assume like most households in those days, even ours decided to sell it off as junk.
If only my grandmother was alive to see how the humble Urli has evolved as a precious piece of decor in hotel lobbies to spas, to homes.
She might just be proud to know that the first thing I bought after my marriage for my house was a brass Urli 🙂 The intent was to turn it into a centre table for my low seating drawing area, by putting a glass top on it. When that did not work, I decided to turn it into a lily pond. Now it sits on my balcony spreading an aura of tranquility around it.
Over the last few years, I have seen Urlis emerge as a universal choice for decor for both traditional and contemporary styles. Its like the humble Urli knows how to own the space it is placed in.
One of the first items that I picked for Rustic Motifs on one of my road trips, was an antique Urli from Mannar in Kerala, it was also the first item we sold on the day of our launch, and thus the Urli once again reinforced its place in my life as a symbol of abundance and prosperity.
After that little insight into my history of Urli fetish, it should come as no surprise, that there is a much coveted Urli amongst our recently launched antique brass hand picked collection. Trust me you won’t believe the depths of junk we sifted through to unearth this gem, which happens to be hand moulded unlike its machine made counterparts.
In case you are looking for your own piece of Urli tales, this is your chance at owning one. Check it out at – http://www.rusticmotifs.com/product/antique-brass-urli
